Blizzard cabbage variety

Blizzard is a mid-late variety of White Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. Capitata). Bred by employees of the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing (FGBNU FNTSO) in Siberia. In 1989 it was included in the State Register of the Russian Federation in seven regions: North-West, Central, Volgo-Vyatka, Central Black Earth, West Siberian, East Siberian, Far East. The variety is suitable for both commercial production and cultivation for personal consumption.

The period from the emergence of full shoots to the onset of technical ripeness is 135-160 days. From the moment the seedlings are planted in the ground to maturity, 95-125 days pass.

The leaf rosette is vertical. Leaves are medium in size, obscure-shaped, slightly wavy at the edges. The color of the leaf plate is predominantly gray-green, sometimes dark green, with a rather pronounced waxy bloom.

Heads of cabbage are round, slightly flattened, covered, and have a white-yellow color in the cut. Their mass is on average 1.8 - 3.3 kg, can reach 4, and in rare cases even 5 kg. A feature of the variety is the high density of heads, which is estimated at 4.6 points. The inner and outer stumps are short. The yield of marketable products is 510-700 c / ha, or 5-7 kg / sq.m. The maximum recorded yield was 756 c / ha.

The variety is universal: it can be used both for fresh consumption and for processing and long-term storage. The taste of the heads of cabbage is good, and even excellent, without bitterness. Many gardeners recommend this cabbage for pickling and canning. By the way, the most valuable feature of the Blizzard is the good preservation of the heads of cabbage - they do not lose their excellent taste up to 8 months of storage! Of course, to achieve this result, you must follow some simple rules: when cutting the forks, leave two or three wrapper leaves and a longer stump.

Speaking about the advantages of this cabbage, one cannot but mention the resistance of the heads of cabbage to cracking. Thanks to this, they do not lose their marketable appearance when transported over long distances. Also to the pluses, in addition to high yield and good taste, include the amicable formation of the crop.

As for agricultural technology, the Blizzard does not require increased attention and the creation of special growing conditions. The variety is undemanding to the composition of the soil. Moreover, it was originally bred for cultivation in areas with unstable climatic conditions, therefore, frequent temperature drops do not have a large effect on yield. The only thing to protect this cabbage from is from waterlogging the soil.

Here are some agronomic tips to help you get a good harvest:

  1. Blizzard should be grown in seedlings;
  2. sowing is usually carried out in the first half of April;
  3. it is important to ensure the correct temperature regime for seedlings: 15-18 ° C during the day, 12-14 ° C at night;
  4. seedlings are planted in the ground at the age of 35-40 days, in the phase of 5-6 true leaves, around the end of May;
  5. planting is carried out according to the scheme 70 × 50 cm.

Do not forget about the timely watering of the plants. In most cases, additional dressings are not required, depending on the composition of the soil.

Blizzard cabbage is resistant to vascular bacteriosis and other diseases.
