Pear variety Century

Century - a variety of pears of the Ural selection with the fruits of the autumn ripening period. Bred in the late 1980s at the South Ural Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable and Potato Growing (abbreviated GNU YUNIIPOK, Chelyabinsk) by hybridization: the selected seedling of the Ussuri pear No. 41−16−1 x elite seedling of the cultivated pear No. 143. The authorship is assigned to the group domestic breeders under the leadership of E.A. Falkenberg.

The trees are medium-sized, compressed, the crown is rounded. The variety is self-fertile. The cultivar is recognized as the best pollinator for the Century Severyanka.

The fruits grow large (one pear weighs an average of 160 g, but the weight of the fruit can vary from 110 to 260 g; rarely, in isolated cases, the weight of the fruit can reach 400 g), of the correct pear-shaped shape. The main color of ripe pears is yellow, the integumentary color is very beautiful, it occupies about 1/3 of the skin surface in the form of an intense pinkish blush.

The pulp is white, very juicy, dessert type, with an excellent sweet and sour taste. Tasting score - 4.4 - 4.8 points out of 5 possible. The variety is consumed mainly fresh.

The time for the removable ripeness of the fruit falls in mid-September. Pears are stored in the mat for one (maximum - one and a half) month.

The early maturity of the pear is good for centuries: trees bear fruit from 4 to 5 years. The yields are high, annual. Winter hardiness is relatively high (in comparison with other varieties of the Ural selection). Scab lesions of the variety were not recorded. Trees are highly resistant to pear gall mite and fire blight.

The main advantage of this pear is its beautiful large fruits with a dessert taste.

No significant shortcomings have yet been noted in the variety.
