Potato variety Zhuravinka
Zhuravinka is a medium-late-ripening potato variety (Solanum tuberosum), obtained by crossing the Polish variety Ceza with the Dutch variety Sante. Bred by employees of the Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for potato and horticultural production. Added to the state register of the Russian Federation in 2005, to the state register of the Republic of Belarus - in 2004. Zoned in Volgo-Vyatka (Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Sverdlovsk region; Republics of Mari El, Udmurt and Chuvash; Perm Territory), Central (Bryansk, Vladimir, Ivanovo, Kaluga, Moscow, Ryazan, Smolensk, Tula region) and North-West (Leningrad , Novgorod, Vologda, Kaliningrad, Kostroma, Pskov, Tver, Yaroslavl regions) regions of the Russian Federation. Authors: G.I. Piskun, L.N. Kozlova, D.E. Portyankin.
The period from planting seeds in the ground to harvesting is 90 to 100 days.
Plants are semi-erect, intermediate type, of medium height. The stem is of medium thickness, medium colored with anthocyanin, the average number of stems on the bush is 5 - 6 pieces. Leaves are small, intermediate, dark green in color; the main vein is weakly stained with anthocyanin. The leaf is medium in size. The edge of the leaf plate is slightly wavy. The inflorescence is medium, few-flowered. Corolla of medium size red-violet color. Seedlings appear evenly. The growth of tops is intense. Berry formation is rare.
The variety is multi-tuberous. When cultivating for food purposes, a more sparse planting is recommended - 45 - 50 thousand tubers / ha, on seed plots - 56 - 65 thousand tubers / ha. If you leave little space between the holes when planting, the tubers will not fit in the row and will begin to bulge above the ground and into the furrows.
Tubers are rounded, medium-sized, with light yellow flesh. The peel is red, smooth (slightly rough). The eyes are small. The number of tubers in the nest is up to 25 pieces. Tuberization and growth rate of tubers are average. Light sprout of medium size; the base of the sprout is ovoid, intensely red, slightly pubescent; the top is small, closed; lateral shoots are short.
Due to the fact that the skin of Zhuravinka is smooth, the soil easily moves away from the tubers - this makes harvesting easier, increases the shelf life and improves the appearance of the potatoes.
The mass of marketable tuber is 90 - 140 grams. The yield of commercial tubers is 177 - 242 c / ha, which is at the level of 121 c / ha higher than the Bronnitsky standard. Productivity per square meter - 7.5 kg. Marketability - 83 - 96%. Keeping quality is 93%.
Table variety with high taste. Suitable for the production of chips, starch, crispy potatoes and the preparation of French fries prepared with food additives. Starch content 14 - 19.5%. Boiled tubers boil well. The pulp does not darken during cooking. Large grains are not formed in the puree. Many gardeners grow this variety just because it is great for making potato pancakes.
Variety Zhuravinka is characterized by resistance to the causative agent of potato cancer (pathotype 1) and golden potato cyst nematode. Highly resistant to black leg, common scab, moderately resistant to late blight of leaves and tubers, rhizoctonia, viruses. The Colorado potato beetle, if there are other varieties on the site, is indifferent to this potato.
Suitable for growing on light and medium-sized soils. It responds well to the application of organic and mineral fertilizers. It reacts poorly to increased doses of nitrogen fertilization. During the growing season, it requires optimal moisture, since it does not tolerate temporary excessive waterlogging, but it also reacts negatively to a deficiency of soil moisture.
This potato has a long dormant period. Stored for a long time (under optimal conditions - until summer).
Advantages of the Zhuravinka variety: good keeping quality, disease resistance, stable yield, high taste and consumer qualities of tubers.
The main disadvantage is a strong sensitivity to lack of moisture. In a dry, hot summer, these potatoes may not give a good harvest - the tubers will grow small, there will be few of them. And in general, he is picky about soils and weather conditions, so he does not show his best qualities in every area.
Several years ago, the invasion of the Colorado potato beetles on late potatoes made me wonder if there are new varieties that are resistant to this scourge. In the store, we were advised to plant Zhuravinka. Allegedly, the leaves of this variety are so tough and rough that the colorado flies around them. I must say right away that this is not true. The leaves are dense, however, the beetle eats Zhuravinka no worse than others. But the variety has taken root with us, we liked that it consistently gives a wonderful harvest of delicious crumbly-boiled tubers on our sandy soil. My mother calls it the potatoes of lazy housewives, because you don't need to mash it - you just get mashed potatoes. Even when boiled in a uniform, it can boil down into porridge, if not kept track.
They have not yet developed such a variety of potatoes to which the Colorado potato beetle would be indifferent, but I want to object to Marina. I have been planting Zhuravinka for two years. Previously, we processed potatoes three times per season, but when we planted this variety, the beetle became much smaller. Processed once and then selectively, where the bushes were weak. I like its taste, I like it when the potatoes are boiled. Puree is obtained without lumps, and which pancakes are simply delicious. In addition, the tubers are well stored in the basement, until spring. Most importantly, it does not germinate there. When we prepare seeds for planting in the spring, you can warm it up in the ground without going over it.
I grow this variety because of its taste. The puree is especially tasty. Zhuravinka is liked by all members of my family. The size of the tubers is not the largest (average) compared to other varieties. The harvest, even in bad years, is more or less normal. I use it for sale, in small quantities. For one customer, on order. He cannot eat store-bought potatoes for health reasons. I do not spray from beetles. My site is lower than the neighbors and I plant two weeks later than the neighbors. All the bugs run across to them. I get bugs in the middle of summer. I throw calendula seeds into the furrows. They grow like a weed and repel bugs. On my site, I try not to use chemistry and sell part of the crop, to regular customers, at a higher price than in a store. How environmentally friendly.
I have been growing a Zhuravinka for five years. A very successful variety for my lands. It grows well on my peat bog. But at a friend's on loam something did not give a good harvest. She does not like heavy soil, as they did not loosen and fertilize, only nuts grew. And I like it, it is well stored and tastes very good, boiled and good for potato pancakes - the dough turns out not to be liquid, but thick, you do not need to add flour. Of the minuses, it has begun to crack in recent years, but I attribute this to weather conditions. The last two years have been humid, followed by heat and drought. But even in such weather, the defeat of late blight was average compared to my Breeze and Lasunk. The yield reached up to 20 tubers from one plant, and the tubers were all as in the selection of an average size, about 100 - 120 g.
