Samson carrot variety
Samson carrots - one of the leaders in sales on the Russian market - have high taste, ease of care and excellent keeping quality of root crops, which is not inferior to the Nandrin hybrid.
Variety of Dutch selection (Bejo Zaden V.V., Varmenhuizen), the average ripening period - from full germination to the onset of technical ripeness takes 110 - 120 days. In 2001 it was included in the State Register for the Central Region.
Samson belongs to carrots of the Nantes cultivar. Semi-spreading leaf rosette. The leaves are green, half-dissected. The root crop is large, aligned, smooth, cylindrical, with a blunt, slightly pointed tip and juicy, sweet orange pulp. The head is even, the shoulders are from flat to rounded. The core is small, orange, tightly connected to the pulp. A ripe root crop is flush with the soil surface. Reaches a mass of 125 - 150 g, length - 16 - 30 cm. The largest specimens grow up to 200 g. The content of carotene in root crops is 11.6 mg%, dry matter - 10.6%.
5 - 8 kg of carrots are obtained from one square meter of planting. Marketable yield is 528 - 762 c / ha, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the variety Nantes 4... The output of marketable products is 91 - 94%.
Seed germination is high (at least 80%), therefore, rare sowing according to the 3 × 15 cm scheme is recommended.
Samson carrots are consumed fresh, used for processing and storage.
Advantages of the variety: it gives a good harvest, excellent taste in root crops, is well stored (until the next harvest).
Last year I decided to try sowing this carrot. And to be honest, she did not particularly delight me with her taste, the root crops had a pronounced core and still a little dry, in my opinion. As for the shape of the fruits, everything is fine here, all the fruits are aligned one to one.
During the growing period, root crops were not affected by diseases. But since I have a lot of bear on the site, there were gnawed specimens.
It's worth trying, I think, the variety will delight you with its beautiful root crops.
These carrots were grown by my parents - the variety is old, reliable, proven over the years. We sow it every year, though a little - to soften in the summer, because the variety belongs to the mid-season, and in our conditions it ripens too early, therefore it becomes problematic to preserve the root crops as a whole, and we do not do any harvesting. Samson likes the fact that he does not have hyper large root crops - everything is medium in size (about 20 - 22 cm), the carrots are all even - there are almost no florid root crops, and this is because the variety is very resistant to viral diseases, therefore, chemical treatments does not require drugs. On the plus side, I can also include the fact that the roots do not "jump" out of the ground - they do not need to be hilled, and the roots do not have the bitterness associated with greening the "bottom".
For many years now, I have grown mainly only this type of carrot. The taste is good, if it does not outgrow, then the core is almost invisible. I store carrots in a caisson. His neck is open almost all winter. I close the lid only in severe frosts, so there is no condensation in it and excellent conditions are created for storing the crop. I put the carrots in large sugar bags.I plant it along the perimeter of the beds with onions - these crops drive away pests from each other. I plant in late May or early June. With early planting, it can be hit by pests, with late planting on marginal and heavy soil, it will not have time to grow.
For the last three years I have not seen seeds of this variety on sale, which is a pity. I planted this carrot a couple of times and was happy with the harvest. It sprouts perfectly, amicably, so you have to thin out twice. And the tops are powerful, strong. The fruits are even, I would even say - beautiful. There are very few small specimens. True, I did not succeed in especially large, record ones. Sizes are medium or slightly larger than average. The blunt tip pleases - it is convenient to clean. It tastes like normal carrots, I haven't noticed any flaws. It was also well preserved, in the cellar in boxes with sand it lay until spring, but my cellar is excellent and any carrots are well stored in it.
