Rose Antik (Antike 89)

The so-called climbing roses, or climbers, are very popular in landscape design. Thanks to these climbing plants, you can create unusually picturesque corners, turn old, nondescript gazebos into fabulous places to relax. Having a well-developed imagination, the gardener will make his garden cozy and comfortable. To do this, you just need to choose the right variety, for example, Antique.

History of creation

Our heroine is one of the best modern types of climbing roses. The unusual shape and color brings back memories of ancient varieties. The described variety belongs to the German selection, bred in the world-famous rose-growing company “W. Kordes' Sohne ". The year of creation is 1988. The initial varieties were: Grand Hotel x Simpathie seeds, Arthur Bell pollen (Floribunda, McGredy, 1965) x unnamed form. The registration name of Antique is KORdalen, at exhibitions it was presented under the name Antike 89. In the floriculture market it is also known as Antique, Antique 89.

Description

Bushes vigorous, 200 - 300 cm high, 200 cm wide, dense. Shoots are upright, semi-flexible and rigid, covered with medium thorns. The foliage is good. The leaves are large, dense, leathery, glossy, dark green. On one stem, brushes of 3 - 5 flowers are formed, less often a single bud appears.

Flowers are the main advantage and difference of a rose. The blossoming buds are large, 12 - 13 cm in size, densely double, with about 70 - 80 petals. The shape of the buds is Antique cupped, the edges of the petals are bent outward, the width of the base of the petal almost coincides with its length. The middle is twisted, in a fully blossoming flower it has a cruciform shape. The color is amazing in beauty, the petals painted in white or light pink color become bright red closer to the edge. The transition from one color to another is smooth, gradual. Due to the large number of petals, the color of the blossoming flower appears red.

Bloom

Antik has proven itself well in central Russia. You should not expect from it a quick manifestation of high decorative qualities. According to reviews, the first flowering of a rose may not be so expressive, and the flowers will seem small to someone. But do not rush to give up the variety right away, you will fall in love with it more and more from year to year. The variety is re-blooming. The first, abundant and vibrant floral wave, when properly trimmed, will be followed by a second. The re-emerging flowers will not be inferior in brightness to the first. The formation of buds continues throughout the season, up to cold weather.

Characteristics

  • The growth of shoots in the Antik variety is slow, the decorativeness of the bush can be judged on the 3rd or 4th year of its life;
  • the flowering period is long, lasts almost until the very cold;
  • the aroma of a rose is unobtrusive, light, with fruity notes;
  • The frost resistance of the plant is very high, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), corresponds to zone 5. The bushes can withstand from -23 ° C to -28.9 ° C. If the winter is too frosty, then the frozen plant can recover very quickly;
  • the flowers have good resistance to rainy weather, do not droop from dampness, do not become stained;
  • the color and general appearance of flowers also do not suffer from extreme heat. The petals do not fade, on the contrary they become redder;
  • Antik's immunity is excellent - the variety practically does not suffer from black spot and powdery mildew;
  • cut rose stands up to 2 weeks.

Agrotechnics

Before planting, immediately determine where the bush will grow, because frequent transplants will not benefit the plant. It is desirable that the site is well lit, protected from drafts, but has little airflow. Planting can be done in spring (April) or autumn (late October-early November). For Antik, fertile, loose soil, such as loam, is suitable. Before planting, the site is dug up and nutrients are added - organic matter and mineral fertilizers, because the rose will bloom in one place for many years.For the winter in warm regions, the bush is not covered, but in cold lashes it is advisable to lay it on a substrate of straw, and cover it on top with a double layer of non-woven material. In the spring, do not rush to immediately remove the shelter. Do this gradually, accustoming plants to sunlight.

Pruning is very important for a climber. The main lashes are cut by 1/3, the lateral shoots are shortened to the 3rd bud. Old and dry branches are cut close to the ground. Thanks to this pruning, the plant quickly grows young growth. In order for the re-emerging buds to bloom as brightly as the first ones, do not forget that the faded heads must be cut off in time. Top dressing is carried out in the spring and after the first flowering.

An interesting feature of Antik is the ability to grow it not only as a climbing species. Thanks to its tough shoots, many rose growers grow the plant as a scrub. But for arched structures, the variety, according to reviews, is not very suitable, again due to poorly bending and thick shoots.

The Antique variety conquers with its unusual colors and long flowering. Rose growers praise its winter hardiness, ability to tolerate bad weather well and excellent immunity. The rose is unpretentious in care, therefore it is suitable for novice gardeners. Of the minuses, many note that abundant flowering, in general, appears only at the ends of the shoots. And due to the stiffness of the branches, difficulties arise with shelter in the winter.
