Rose Mona Lisa (Mona Lisa)
If you prefer luscious hues in your garden design, you will definitely like roses, whose buds have a deep deep red color. Such plants include, for example, the Mona Lisa variety, which is not yet very common in our country. It will captivate you with its lush bloom, resistance to summer heat and a delicate aroma.
History of creation
Mona Lisa is a floribunda from the Romance series. It appeared relatively recently, in 2007, but has already managed to acquire many fans among flower growers. The variety was developed by the French rose-growing company Meilland. In a number of characteristics, it is similar to the Red Leonardo Da Vinci variety. For the spectacular shade of flower petals and good immunity, the culture received the ADR quality mark (Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprufung - German Certification of Varietal Roses). At one time, the flower received a silver medal at a competition in Monza (Italy). The registration name of the culture is MEIlyxir.
Description
An attractive perennial plant forms a compact bush. Its height ranges from 50 to 80 cm, and its width does not exceed 0.6 meters. Due to the large number of shoots and medium-sized, dense, dark green, shiny foliage, the ornamental shrub looks lush and dense. The stems of the Mona Lisa are quite durable, which is why the crown keeps its shape perfectly during flowering.
The goblet buds that appear on the culture are painted in a pink-cream shade. As they bloom, they acquire a juicy bright red, and closer to autumn, a dark red or wine tone. The flowers of this rose are double, large, up to 12 cm in diameter. Each of them consists of about 80 petals, which makes it look tightly packed. The flower shape is nostalgic, ancient, rosette-shaped. On one stem, from 3 to 5 buds are formed with a weak, but persistent and very pleasant smell. The French coquette blooms continuously throughout the growing season, until late autumn. The flowering of the variety is characterized as abundant.
An important feature of a perennial is the fact that the petals forming its buds do not fade in the sun and do not bake under the influence of high temperatures. In addition, it should be noted that the flowers are very resistant to rain. Mona Lisa is a winter-hardy variety that is not damaged by frosts down to -30 ° C. Rose has a high immunity to diseases (primarily black spot and powdery mildew), as well as insect pests.
Growing and care
For the cultivation of the wonderful Mona Lisa flower, a place that is not shaded by buildings or tall trees is suitable, since this culture is very light-loving. Despite the absence of negative consequences as a result of exposure to summer heat, it is better to shade the plant in the midday hours. It is worth providing the shrub with good air circulation in order to reduce the likelihood of damage to the crop by pests and diseases.
The soil used for planting a decorative perennial should be light, loose, rich in humus, with a slightly acidic reaction. Make sure that the groundwater level in the area where you plan to grow the rose is at least a meter. A layer of gravel or fine crushed stone is laid on the bottom of a previously prepared hole about 60 cm deep, a part of the garden soil is poured on top. Then the root system of the seedling is lowered into the pit, the roots are straightened, covered with the remaining soil, which is compacted and watered. It is useful to mulch the area of the trunk circle with peat.
Caring for Mona Lisa consists of regular watering, top dressing, weeding, loosening the soil under the bush and pruning. Consider the following nuances:
- moisten the soil up to twice a week;
- water for irrigation is not taken cold and must be settled;
- in spring, organic concentrates are used as fertilizer;
- mineral complexes are indicated for application under a rose in the phase of bud formation on the plant and after flowering;
- it is necessary to cut the shrub in the spring (remove the frozen shoots) and in the fall (thin the bush, remove the diseased and dry stems).
Covering a perennial for the winter is required when growing it in the middle lane and regions with a harsh climate. For this, the shoots are pruned, leaving 40-50 cm from their main length; then the bush is spud with dry soil and covered with insulation.
Use cases
The medium-sized variety is ideal for group plantings, border decoration along the edges of paths, garden stairs, near the gazebo. In any case, if desired, the flowers of the described variety can be alternated with plants of other varieties of the same height. However, attractive mono-compositions will also turn out from the Mona Lisa bushes, if they are planted in groups of 3-5 pieces. In mixborders, spectacular roses tend to be placed in the foreground. Feel free to use a noble plant to create a rock garden and rockery, where the owner of bright flowers will look especially advantageous in combination with white gravel. As for other crops, choose decorative deciduous perennials, flowering plants with white, cream, blue, lilac buds as companions to the European beauty. Spectacular Mona Lisa is suitable for single plantings on the lawn, for growing on a trunk, in containers.
