Rose Spirit of Freedom
English roses have long become a symbol of sophistication and nobility. They stand out among other varieties of the "flower queen" inimitable shape and splendor of flowers, and often - and heady aroma. This article will focus on the wonderful variety Spirit of Freedom, which saw the light of day not so long ago - at the beginning of this century.
History of appearance
This variety was bred in the famous nursery of British breeder David Austin. The year of its origin is 2002, the year of official registration is 2014. The name of the variety Spirit of freedom is translated from English as “Spirit of freedom”. Another name for our heroine is AUSbite. Some experts classify this variety as a scrub.
Description of the variety
At just one glance at the sophisticated Englishwoman, the features of old roses become noticeable. They are present mainly in the appearance of lovely flowers: densely double, cupped, large (12-14 cm in diameter). Dense and elastic buds appear in inflorescences of 1-3 pieces and, when blooming, as a rule, "look" down, because they are rather weighty. The delicate pink color gives a special charm to the flowers. Over time, the flower petals, slightly curved towards the center, become pale lilac. It should be noted that the number of petals in luxurious flowers is simply colossal (it can go up to 50 pieces), because it seems as if they are about to burst. During flowering, a rich aroma with pronounced notes of citrus and myrrh is felt near the plant. The culture blooms profusely throughout the season.
The rose bush reaches a height of 1.2-1.5 meters. It grows 120 cm wide. Spirit of Freedom is a vigorous culture with branchy shoots and dark green, semi-glossy foliage with a gray tint. The decorative perennial is characterized by dense foliage. By the way, in color, the leaves and flowers of the plant are combined quite harmoniously. The gentle Englishwoman belongs to the re-flowering varieties.
Rose has an extremely high resistance to fungal diseases. It can hibernate without shelter, without being damaged by frost down to -23 ° C. The magnificent flowers of Spirit of freedom are very resistant to rain, their petals do not bake in direct sunlight, although they fade somewhat, which, however, does not spoil the impression of the British beauty at all. But the buds of precipitation do not like: they can rot and even not open at all after the rain. In order to avoid breaking off the shoots under the weight of the flowers, you can set up a support and tie up the branches of the bush, but this almost never happens, since the stems of the plant are quite strong.
Features of agricultural technology
It is recommended to plant a perennial in an openwork partial shade, then the sunlight will not harm it, and the flowering of the shrub will be full and lush. Please note that the sector of the site chosen for planting the noble plant must be protected from drafts. Do not place a bush in a low place - a hill is much more suitable for these purposes.
Spirit of Freedom is undemanding to the soil. However, an exquisite rose looks much more attractive in the case of sufficient nutritional value, looseness of the soil. An important condition: the soil under the plant must be slightly acidic (recommended pH 5.6-6.5). To improve the usual garden soil, humus, peat, manure, vermicompost should be used. You can add sod land.
The most suitable time for landing an Englishwoman: the period from mid-April to mid-May. If you live in the southern region, you can plant the crop in the fall, but always before the onset of frost.Do not forget to lay a drainage layer at the bottom of the planting pit. After planting, the plant is watered, and the soil in the zone of the trunk circle is mulched with peat to retain moisture. Caring for the aristocrat Spirit of freedom consists in regular watering, feeding, systematic removal of weeds, and loosening. Mulching, spring and fall pruning are also important. In the summer, it is required to promptly remove faded inflorescences from the rose so that new buds appear in their place.
The plant should be covered for the winter. First, the autumn pruning of the shoots is carried out, then the bush is spud with dry earth, and then they are insulated with spruce branches or non-woven material. It is especially important not to neglect the shelter of the flower for the winter when cultivating crops in regions with a harsh climate.
