Tomato variety King of Kings
There are all kinds of kings among the varieties of tomatoes, but perhaps the most ambitious is the King of Kings. And believe me, this name is well deserved. According to the available information, this person was created at the FGBUN Institute of General Genetics named after V.I. N.I. Vavilov Russian Academy of Sciences. Our hero is not registered in the State Register of Plants of the Russian Federation. Seed material is sold by many companies, including "Gavrish", "SeDeK", "Siberian Garden", but the paradox is that it is not easy to buy seeds. Tomato is grown in all regions of Russia. Suitable for open and closed ground. Not a hybrid.
Description
The plant is indeterminate, with a powerful bush with strong branching. Height - 1.8 meters. In the open field, the plant can be limited to 1.5 meters, and in the closed field it overcomes the two-meter limit. Average leafiness. The leaf blade is simple, pinnate, medium-sized, alternate, green. The surface of the leaf is slightly wrinkled, matte, the venation is reticulate, moderately pronounced. The stem is slightly pubescent. The peduncle is articulated. The first fruit cluster in the variety is laid over the 9th node. Subsequent ones are formed every 3 sheets. Each brush can carry up to 5 ovaries. The appearance of flower brushes does not limit the growth of the plant.
The fruits of the King of Kings are round in shape, slightly flattened, have a slight ribbing and a smooth surface. Tomatoes are dense and fleshy. In an immature form, they are painted in a pale green color, there is no spot at the stalk. Ripe tomatoes are bright red. The skin is thin, but strong enough, has a slight gloss. The pulp is quite dense, contains little liquid, the dry matter content is from 8 to 10%. There are few seeds. The seed chambers are small, from 4 to 8 pieces, located closer to the walls of the fruit. The taste is very good and excellent, the pulp is sweet, the sourness is almost not caught. The mass of tomatoes can vary greatly, the figure varies from 300 grams to 1 kg. The maximum recorded weight was 1.5 kg.
Variety characteristics
- In terms of ripening, the variety belongs to the middle late - from the moment of emergence to the start of harvesting, 110 - 120 days pass;
- the ovaries are formed and ripen gradually, so the fruiting period is very prolonged;
- the yield is excellent - up to 5 kg of marketable fruits are removed from one plant. In the greenhouse, the figure rises to 7 - 8 kg;
- the immunity of the King of Kings is good. It is especially appreciated by gardeners for its resistance to late blight;
- the most insidious enemy of tomato among insect pests is the whitefly;
- if the greenhouse is too hot and humid, the skin may crack. The same will happen if a ripe tomato is not removed in time;
- dense pulp withstands long-term transportation. The keeping quality of the fruits is also good - if the storage standards are observed for up to 2 - 3 weeks, they do not lose their marketability and taste;
- the way of eating the fruit is almost universal. The fleshy, tasty pulp is unusually good in its natural form, suitable for processing into tomato products (pasta, juices, mashed potatoes). But too large a size does not allow the use of tomatoes of this variety for whole canning.
Agrotechnics
In the southern regions, it is possible to sow seeds directly into the ground. But the most reliable way for all regions without exception is seedling. Sowing for seedlings is carried out 60 - 70 days before disembarkation to a permanent place. Seeds germinate actively at 23 - 25 ° C. Planting scheme: 40 cm between plants in a row, row spacing - 50 cm. Planting density - 3 - 4 bushes per 1 square meter. In the open field, the best predecessors will be zucchini, cauliflower, dill, parsley, cucumbers.The place for growing tomatoes should be sunny.
The King of Kings is responsive to watering, especially in hot weather. The giant needs fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizers (by the way, they can be alternated with organic matter). Also, care activities include weeding and loosening. The plant is formed into 1 - 2 stems, with the obligatory garter on a vertical support. According to some gardeners, it can be grown in 3 stems. This increases the number of ovaries, but the average weight of the fruit is reduced. Garters require not only stems, but also too heavy fruit clusters. If this is not done in time, the brush will break off.
Among the tomato nobility, the King of Kings is not yet well known. But everyone who has grown it confidently claims that they will do it again. The variety conquers with giant fruits, high productivity, unpretentiousness and resistance to the formidable phytophthora. Among the disadvantages is the need to tie up not only the bush itself, but also the fruit brushes. Gardeners also complain about the high price of tomato seeds.
