Cherry variety Tamaris
Before the revolution, some regions of Russia were famous for cherry orchards, but after the cultivation of this useful berry began to decline. Many varieties were lost, but at the same time, breeders began to breed new ones, imparting useful properties to the culture, for example, winter hardiness. Tamaris appeared thanks to T.N. Morozova. The birthplace of the variety - All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture. I.V. Michurin. The genetic material was black consumer goods cherry, seedlings from its seeds were treated with the chemical mutagen EI at a concentration of 0.005%. At the end of 1987, an application was filed for the introduction of the "novelty" into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. It has been on variety testing since 1988, registration in the State Register took place in 1994. Regions of admission - North Caucasian, Central and Central Chernozem districts. Cherries also thrive in Crimea, eastern Moldova and Ukraine.
Description
The plant is undersized, dwarf, height is about 2 meters, less often - 2.5 meters. The Tamaris tree looks very decorative during the flowering period and in the autumn. The crown of the variety is not dense, round, slightly raised and spreading. The bark of the trunk and skeletal branches is brown. Long shoots of cherry are covered with brown-brown bark with rare lenticels. Oval buds grow slightly deviating from the shoot. The leaf is of normal size, slightly elongated, narrowly oval, the edge with double-gable serration, the color is green. The surface of the leaf plate is shiny, with reticular veins, smooth relief, without pubescence. The petiole connecting the leaf and the shoot is short, moderately thick, and there is no anthocyanin coloration at the base. At the base of the leaf blade, 1 or 2 dark red glands can be found. Leaves persist until the onset of frost, turning reddish, and then quickly crumble. The flowers of Tamaris are small, pink, dazzling white. The petals are rounded. The stigma of the pistil rises above the stamens. Fruiting of cherries occurs on bouquet branches, such as spur.
The drupes of the variety are medium or large, weighing 3.8 - 5 grams. The shape is round, the top is flat-round, the depression at the base of the berry is small, the abdominal suture is small. The skin is smooth, glossy, dark red, the number of integumentary points is insignificant. The pulp is of medium density, juicy, delicate, dark red in color. The taste is good, sweet and sour, sweetness prevails over sourness. The juice is colored, purple. The stone is round, cream-colored, rather large, easily separates from the pulp. The peduncle is long, the separation from the drupe is semi-dry. 100 grams of pulp contains: sugars - 9.99%, acids - 1.67%, ascorbic acid - 38 mg.
Variety characteristics
- The early maturity of Tamaris is very good, the fruiting period begins quite early - 2 - 4 years after planting;
- according to the State Register of Plants of the Russian Federation, cherry yield is higher than the average. In the conditions of Michurinsk, it is 60 - 80 c / ha. Up to 10 kg of fruits are removed from one small tree, but the harvest can be more significant if you follow all the rules of agricultural technology;
- flowering takes place at a later date, so the flowers do not suffer from recurrent frosts. The flowering period is short - no more than 6 days;
- ripening period is medium late. In Michurinsk, it occurs in late July - early August;
- the duration of the productive life of a cherry is 20 years;
- the variety is winter-hardy, without shelter it is capable of overwintering at -24 ° C. According to reviews, in the coldest winters, only partial freezing is possible, but thanks to the good growth of the shoots, the recovery is going well;
- drought resistance at an average level;
- the immunity of Tamaris is above average, especially the variety is valued for its high field resistance to coccomycosis; in epiphytotic years, the lesion did not exceed 2 points. But it can be slightly affected by moniliosis;
- the transportability of the fruits is not very high, as is the shelf life. This is due to the fact that, together with the stalk, part of the skin can come off, which provokes the release of juice;
- but on the other hand, cherry fruits are universal in use.They are surprisingly tasty in their natural form, suitable for canning and are perfectly processed into preserves, jams, jam, juice, compote, liqueur.
Pollinators
The culture is highly self-fertile. But to improve the quality and quantity of the crop, it is still better to plant a suitable pollinator nearby. As a last resort, you can graft its branch into the crown of Tamaris. The best neighbors will be varieties Turgenevka, Lyubskaya, Zhukovskaya.
Planting and leaving
The recommended planting time for cherries varies depending on the growing region. In the south, autumn planting is preferable, in the Central one it can be planted both in spring and autumn. The site should be sunny, well ventilated during the growing season, but protected from the prevailing winter winds. The plant has no special complaints about the soils, with the exception of acidity - it must be neutral. The groundwater level is at least 2 meters to the surface. Tamaris can grow safely next to grapes or hawthorns. But tall apple, apricot or pear trees should be at least 6 meters away.
The care corresponds to the general agricultural technique for the culture. Formation is easy, caring for the crown and harvesting cherries is not difficult. The only agronomic feature of the variety is the need for annual spring pruning.
High winter hardiness, coccomycosis resistance, good yield and versatility of berries in use make Tamaris a desirable acquisition for any gardener. In addition, the tree will be able to bring zest to your garden, because you can admire it throughout the growing season, starting with flowering and ending with bright leaf fall.
