Apple variety Vasyugan
Vasyugan is a columnar apple variety with fruits of late summer period of consumption (3rd decade of August), obtained in 1987 at the Institute of Horticulture (now VSTISP). Authors of the variety: V.V. Kichina, N.G. Morozov. Vasyugan belongs to highly winter-resistant varieties, therefore, it is ideal for cultivation not only in the territory of Central Russia, but also in regions with a more severe climate - the Urals and the Far East. This apple tree is allowed to be planted even in those places where the frost-resistant Antonovka.
According to the strength of growth, the trees are semi-dwarf and grow in one trunk. At the age of 6 - 8 years, the trees reach their maximum height - 3 meters. Despite the rather strong foliage, the crown is compact and small in size. Fruiting is concentrated on ringlets, abundantly covering the apple tree trunk in the form of a column.
The fruits grow of medium and large size, the weight of one apple is on average 100 - 140 g, but it can reach up to 200 g. Apples are hard and have a conical and elongated-conical shape. The skin is thin but firm. The fruits are brightly colored: the main color is yellow-green, the integumentary color is expressed by a pink-red striped blush on a significant part of the apple.
The pulp is white-cream in color, dense, fine-grained structure, chipping type. According to the tasting criteria, apples of a dessert type, excellent sweet and sour taste (sourness is pronounced clearly), juicy, with a well-defined aroma.
Depending on the place of planting, the period of removable maturity of the fruits falls on the end of August - mid-September. When carefully picked and stored correctly, apples stay fresh for up to one month. The variety is suitable not only for fresh consumption, but also for all types of home processing (drying, juices, compotes, etc.)
The Vasyugan apple tree is fast-growing and high-yielding. After planting annual seedlings in the garden, fruiting occurs in the first year, up to 6 apples can be harvested from each apple tree. With each subsequent year, the yield increases, the maximum yield is achieved at a constant place in the 4th - 5th year after planting - up to 6 - 7 kg of fruits from an apple tree (80 - 100 t / ha). In comparison with the ordinary Antonovka, the yield of Vasyugan is 5 times higher (when calculated by the area of the garden). One tree can effectively bear fruit for 14-16 years, after which the yield declines. Therefore, it is recommended to renew the garden every 10 years: by the end of the active fruiting period of the first plantings, younger apple trees will just reach their maximum productivity.
For the Vasyugan variety, the following planting scheme is recommended: the distance between seedlings is 40 cm, between rows - 1 m.Also, do not forget that Vasyugan, like other columnar apple trees, belongs to the intensive type: with proper tree care (regular watering, pruning , the introduction of organic matter into the soil, protection from pests and diseases), the yield can be significantly increased (2 - 3 times).
The winter hardiness of the variety is very high, the trees do not freeze at temperatures down to minus 42 ° C. Resistance to scab and other diseases and pests corresponds to the level of the best standard varieties.
The main advantages of the Vasyugan apple tree are: high rates of early maturity and productivity, compactness of trees, high commercial and consumer characteristics of fruits, excellent winter hardiness, relatively high resistance to diseases and pests.
Disadvantages: short-term keeping quality of fruits (only 30 days).
The first photo is not Vasyugan at all, please remove it. Here is the second - yes. I know what I'm talking about - I froze it and wrote my dissertation on it.
Corrected. Thank!
I live in Tomsk. Tell me, is it worth planting Vasyugan? If it freezes, it will be very sorry.
Vasyugan has been growing in our garden in the north of the Moscow region for more than 10 years. During this time, I never froze. It needs a pollinator so that an apple tree of a different variety grows literally 3 meters away, blooming at the same time. Otherwise, ovaries do not give at all. Sensitive to lack of moisture and nutrition: without watering in a drought and without regular feeding, apples fall unripe.
In 2016, for the first time, we managed to bring half of the set crop to maturity. They fed the tree both at the root and on the leaf. But during the period of sugar collection - closer to the time of removable maturity, the apples turned brown, rotted and fell off. We could eat only unripe apples with a starchy aftertaste. The mature ones, unfortunately, were already rotted on the tree - about half of each apple. The same in storage - collected slightly unripe, rotted in a matter of days. And this despite the fact that during the filling period (early August), all apple trees and apples were processed by Hom.
