Potato variety Early morning

Early morning - early ripe potato variety (Solanum tuberosum) for table use. Obtained by the labors of the Chelyabinsk breeders of the company NPO Garden and Vegetable Garden LLC, the creator is V.V. Stepanov. A variety was derived based on the popular Russian variety Morning - the specialists set the task to improve the quality of the source, and they did it well. More recently, in 2016, this potato was included in the state register of plants of the Russian Federation for the Ural region (Kurgan, Orenburg, Chelyabinsk regions and the Republic of Bashkortostan). Not affected by the Colorado potato beetle. Differs in drought resistance, good taste and unpretentious care. Can produce two crops per season.

To begin with, you should make a small introduction. It is widely believed among the people that the plants that the Colorado potato beetle does not eat are genetically modified organisms. However, such varieties can be created by traditional breeding, without using methods of genetic modification, thus our hero was obtained. Early morning is absolutely safe, and Colorado beetles do not like it because of the well-pubescent leaves - insects simply cannot lay eggs on them. Even the originator himself indicates on his official website that there have never been and never will be genetically modified varieties in his catalog.

The period from full germination to harvest takes about 60-75 days, but the first digging can be carried out on the 45th day.

The plant is tall, intermediate type, the main stem is semi-erect. Potato leaves are medium in size, open type, dark green in color. The leaf plate is covered with many hard hairs. Corollas are large, lilac in color, the anthocyanin coloration of their inner side is of medium intensity.

In one nest, 5-9 large uniform tubers are formed with an average weight of 98-192 grams each. They have an oval or oval-rounded regular shape, a flat surface. The peel is red in color, strong, has a mesh structure. The cut flesh is light yellow in color. The eyes are small, inconspicuous, shallow.

The early morning showed itself very well during the state tests. So, the marketable yield was noted in the range of 140-321 c / ha, 50-101 c / ha more than indicators Zhukovsky Early, Spring is white. During the first digging, on the 45th day of the growing season, 295 c / ha were obtained, 81 c / a higher than the Spring White standard. During the second digging, on the 55th day after full germination, 300 c / ha were harvested, 77 c / ha more than the Spring White standard. The maximum yield was achieved in the Republic of Bashkortostan - 344 centners of potatoes were received from a hectare of area, 102 centners / ha more than Leader standards. Such indicators can be safely called impressive - few domestic varieties can boast of such results. The marketability of tubers is also at a high level - 69−88%. And keeping quality does not lag behind - 92%, but there is one peculiarity. The crop must be stored at a temperature not exceeding 2-3 ° C, with a larger tuber crops will begin to germinate.

Early morning has excellent taste, experts have estimated them at 4.5 points out of five possible. In cooking, it is versatile, suitable for the preparation of any dishes. The tubers are medium-sized, best suited for frying, baking, stuffing, and also perfectly complement salads, vegetable mixes and soups. The pulp has a pleasant consistency, without excessive wateriness, the starch content in it is 14.2-16.4%.

The variety is undemanding to soils and climatic conditions, moreover, in its region it is perfectly zoned and is able to manifest itself much better than many other varieties, more productive, but poorly adapted to the Ural climate. This potato tolerates drought very calmly, and even feels normal when it gets cold. It is unpretentious in care, and even the most inept gardener will cope with its cultivation.Below are some simple tips to help you get more harvest.

  • Before planting, the seed must be treated with dressing agents and, if desired, with growth stimulants. No pre-germination is required as the tubers have a very short dormancy period.
  • You can plant it already at the end of April, but it is better to wait until the soil warms up to about + 10 ° C and the danger of frost has passed. If you do decide to land earlier, take care of the covering material.
  • During the growing season, the plants do not need special care, however, they respond perfectly to the timely implementation of agrotechnical measures. These include loosening the soil, watering, weeding, hilling, top dressing, as well as preventive treatment against pests and diseases.
  • Don't forget to maintain a crop rotation. This will protect the plants from infection with diseases typical of nightshades. The best precursors to potatoes are legumes, cabbage, cucumber, onions, zucchini, garlic, green manures, and beets.

As mentioned in the beginning, the Early Morning can produce two crops per season. There are quite a few ways to obtain such results, so we will not consider them. One has only to say that it is not always possible in the Ural region to grow two crops, so it is better to choose those methods that will take less time.

Our hero is resistant to the causative agent of cancer, but he is susceptible to the golden cyst nematode. According to the All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology, it is moderately susceptible to late blight, both in tops and tubers.

During its rather short period of existence, the variety has not yet managed to gain many positive reviews, but its popularity continues to grow. It especially attracts the attention of gardeners with its excellent taste, unpretentiousness, high yield and good presentation of tubers. It is worth noting the invulnerability of plants to the Colorado potato beetle, however, this advantage played a "cruel joke" with our hero - many gardeners were afraid to grow it on their site because of the myth of its genetic modification.

The disadvantages of "Early Morning" include susceptibility to late blight, as well as its storage characteristics. If the temperature regime in the storage is not observed, the tubers will begin to sprout, and if you overlook this moment, in winter you can be left without potatoes for consumption.
