Pear variety Svarog
Svarog is a pear variety of the Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia named after V.I. M.A. Lisavenko with fruits of early autumn ripening period. Obtained in 1969 through crossing the Ussuri pear with the French variety Bere Bosc. The authorship is assigned to I.P. Kalinina, I.A. Puchkin and G. N. Baikova. In 1993, the variety was transferred for State testing, and in 1996 it was zoned in the West Siberian (Altai Territory), East Siberian (Krasnoyarsk Territory) and Volgo-Vyatka regions.
The trees are of medium size, the crown is dense, round in shape. The bark on the main branches is brownish-gray, flaky type.
Shoots have a slightly arched shape and are colored brownish-red; pubescence is present at the tips of the shoots. The leaves are small in size, light green, elliptical in shape, with a helical twisted top. The surface of the leaf blade is wrinkled, slightly fleecy.
Svarog pear fruits are below average size (on average 75 - 78 g, the largest specimens can reach 100 g), leveled, with a smooth surface, wide pear-shaped or blunt-conical shape. The skin is dull, not rough, you can easily see small greenish subcutaneous dots on it. When picked, the fruits are greenish; during the period of consumer maturity, the pears turn yellow. The cover color is expressed in the form of a small blurred and striped red blush. The stalks are of medium length and curved. The funnel is narrow, smooth, shallow. The saucer is wide, medium in depth. The cup is not falling. The heart is medium-sized, ovoid. Seed chambers are medium in size, closed. The sub-calyx tube is very weakly expressed. Seeds are large, brown, ovoid.
The pulp is tender, with a creamy tinge, semi-oily, juicy, good sweet and sour taste, slightly aromatic, with a spicy aftertaste. By chemical composition, the fruits contain: the sum of sugars (9.5%), titratable acids (0.44%), ascorbic acid (9.5 mg / 100 g), tannins (170 mg / 100 g), P-active compounds (125 mg / 100 g). According to the purpose, the variety is universal: the fruits are suitable both for fresh consumption and for all types of technical processing.
The period of removable ripeness of fruits falls on the end of September, the consumption period starts from the beginning of October. Under normal room conditions, pears are stored no more than 2 - 3 weeks, when stored in the refrigerator, the fruits retain their freshness for 90 days,
The early maturity of the Svarog pear is at an average level, the trees begin to bear fruit at 4 - 5 years. Fruiting is regular, but not abundant. The yield is estimated, in general, as average: under the conditions of Barnaul in the period from 1992 to 2000. the average yield was 19.6 kg of fruits per tree (10.9 t / ha). Winter hardiness and drought resistance are satisfactory, but still, in general, the variety tolerates winters very well. Resistance to fungal diseases is high.
It is important to take into account that on poor, insufficiently moist soils, the taste of the fruit deteriorates.
The main advantages of the Svarog pear include good commercial and consumer qualities of fruits, high resistance to scab, and the suitability of fruits for processing.
Among the main disadvantages are the insufficiently large fruit size (below average), the tendency of the crown to thicken, as well as the demanding variety for growing conditions.
My Svarog is 18 years old. Not growing, but suffering. Began to bear fruit 9 years after planting. Then she fell ill with a bacterial burn. For 2 years I treated her with antibiotics. The harvest is mediocre - 15-20 pieces. The taste is disgusting, tart. I eat and cry - it's a pity to throw it away. I wanted to knock it out. Chopped down a birch shading pear in the middle of the day - the taste improved. I cut down the second birch - the taste has become even better, at least you can already eat it. I read that the pear reacts very much to the composition of the soil, that it needs a sour soil - it covered the trunk circle with rotted pine logs, gave it good feeding and watering, and this year it was still a very hot summer. Well, the pear gave out 3 buckets of huge pears, 320g each. But still there is a slight astringency.
